Zirconia Dental Milling Burs

Zirconia Dental Milling Burs
Zirconia is the most widely milled indirect restorative material in dental CAD/CAM. Full-contour monolithic, multi-layer, and high-translucency zirconia blocks all put different demands on the cutting tool. The burs in this category are selected for dental zirconia specifically, not general-purpose carbide, so margins stay sharp and chipping on thin edges is kept to a minimum.
Where these burs are used
- Monolithic crowns, bridges and screw-retained restorations
- Multi-layer zirconia blocks (cervical to incisal colour gradient)
- High-translucency (1000+ MPa) and 3Y / 4Y / 5Y zirconia
- Implant abutments and hybrid crown-abutment work
- Full-arch frameworks milled from 98 mm, 95 mm and 89 mm discs
How to choose the right bur
For zirconia, the two specifications that matter most are tip diameter and shank fit. Larger-diameter burs (2.5 mm and 2.0 mm) are used for rough shaping, medium burs (1.0 mm) for axial walls and fissures, and fine burs (0.6 mm, 0.3 mm) for occlusal anatomy and fine margin finishing. Shank diameter must match your machine's tool changer - common dental shanks are 3 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm. If your machine is not listed on a product page, confirm the shank before ordering.
Coating and life
Our zirconia burs use a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating on a micro-grain carbide substrate. Expected life depends on block sintering grade, feed rate, and whether you pre-sinter or green-state mill, but a standard 2.5 -> 1.0 -> 0.6 mm tool set typically covers 30 to 60 crowns before performance drops meaningfully. Track your milling logs rather than replacing on a fixed calendar.
