PMMA & Wax Dental Milling Burs
PMMA and wax are the softest materials a dental mill typically handles, but they are also where lab productivity lives - provisionals, try-ins, denture teeth, mock-ups and model work are the everyday output of most CAD/CAM labs. Because the material is soft, the bur specification that drives quality is not hardness; it is flute geometry and rake angle. A bur optimised for zirconia will smear PMMA instead of cutting it.
Where these burs are used
- PMMA long-term temporaries, mock-ups and try-in crowns
- Denture bases, denture teeth and full dentures in PMMA discs
- Castable and millable wax copings, frameworks and bars
- Surgical guides and hybrid PMMA restorations
- Full-arch mock-ups milled from 98 mm, 95 mm and 89 mm discs
What matters
For PMMA and wax, you want 2-flute or 3-flute open geometry with a polished flute surface so chips evacuate cleanly - trapped chips melt and re-weld to the cutting edge, which is the usual root cause of fuzzy margins and surface drag. You do not need a diamond or DLC coating on PMMA; uncoated or lightly coated carbide is usually the better choice and runs longer per bur.
Compatibility
Our PMMA and wax burs cover the shank diameters and tip geometries of the common dental CAD/CAM machines - Roland DWX-4 / 42W / 52D / 53D, Zirkonzahn M1 Soft, Amann Girrbach Ceramill, Sirona inLab, Arum 5X, XTCERA X-mill, IMES-ICORE, Aidite AMD / AMM series, UP3D, JINY JDM5, Cradle, VHF K-series, BSM, Dentium, UPCERA FLNTMill, Ivoclar PM and others. Shank diameters must match your machine's tool changer. CADBURS is not affiliated with any of these manufacturers; all trademarks belong to their respective owners.
